Out of Marfa, Texas — a remote high-desert art town as far from a thriving metal scene as you can get — E.E.O.G. trades on slow, sun-cooked doom and stoner riffs that feel as wide and empty as the Chihuahuan landscape outside their door.

San Antonio's Earthen has been operating in the heavy doom metal tradition since 2005, a Texas band that moves at a funeral pace and draws on the long shadows the state's harder rock history casts over everything beneath it.

Massive Epic Crust / Doom / Thrash Metal out of Texas.
Monolithic Heavy / Doom Metal from Dallas.

Active off and on since 1999. One of Austin's earlier sludge/stoner acts, predating much of the city's current heavy scene.
Devastating Progressive / Doom / Death Metal from Dallas.

Austin's Emerald Wolfen channel the city's storied stoner and doom heritage into slow, lysergic riff cycles built for volume and open space — music that feels as much at home in the Texas Hill Country as it does in a sweat-soaked venue.

Colossal Stoner / Doom Metal out of Texas.
Suffocating Sludge / Doom Metal out of Texas.

Austin funeral doom metal act named for the sleeping shepherd of Greek myth, conjuring extraordinarily slow, grief-saturated music since 2024. In a city known for every other genre, they carve out space for the most patient and mournful strain of extreme metal.

Devastating Deathcore from San Antonio.

Austin's Esclavo — Spanish for "slave" — crawls through the sludge and doom underground with the heavy, chain-dragging gait implied by its name. Since 2010 the band has cultivated a sound rooted in the slow, suffocating tradition of Southern sludge, earning its place in a city with a rich history of underground heaviness.

Brutal Heavy Metal (early); Thrash / Death Metal (later) from Arlington.

Houston's Evokation are a thrash metal outfit forged in 2016 with a clear debt to the old-school Bay Area and Teutonic traditions, filtered through the Texas heat. They traffic in fast, riff-forward aggression with shouted vocals and breakneck tempos that keep the spirit of classic thrash alive in the Bayou City underground.

Funeral doom duo of Shane Elwell and Ryan Wilson, who also collaborate in Pneuma Hagion. Released a split with Wilson's solo project The Howling Void.
