1,665 Bands, 7 Shows: Inside the Texas Metal Scene's Supply-Demand Gap in 2026
As of 2026-09-30, Texas Metal Index indexes 1,665 bands across the state — and just 7 upcoming shows. That ratio, roughly 238 bands for every scheduled gig, is the single most striking number in our database this quarter. Texas has no shortage of metal bands. It has a shortage of stages currently booked to put them on.
This isn't necessarily a crisis — show calendars fill in continuously and our index only captures shows that are confirmed and dated at the time of this snapshot. But the gap is worth sitting with. Texas Metal Index tracks 100 venues statewide, and only a handful of them currently have a metal, punk, or hardcore show on the books. That means roughly 93 of the 100 venues we track have no upcoming metal show listed in our system right now.
Death Metal Still Rules Texas
Of the 1,665 bands in the index, 619 are tagged as Death Metal bands — that's 37% of the entire state roster, more than double the next closest genre. Thrash Metal (349 bands) and Black Metal (332 bands) round out a clear top three, together accounting for another 41% of the index. After that, the numbers drop sharply: Doom Metal sits at 167, Progressive Metal at 147, and Heavy Metal / NWOTHM at 135.
The tail is long. Grindcore (105), Heavy Metal (99), Metalcore (95), and Hardcore Punk (94) form a tight cluster rounding out the top ten, but none of them come close to challenging death metal's grip on the state. For a genre-by-genre breakdown, the full top ten looks like this:

Note that these counts overlap — bands are frequently tagged with more than one genre, so the sum of the top ten (2,142) exceeds the total band count (1,665). Still, the ranking order is a reasonably clean signal of where Texas metal's creative energy concentrates.
Houston Leads, But the Big Four Are Close
Houston edges out the rest of the state with 293 bands in our index, followed closely by Austin (278), Dallas (237), and San Antonio (207). Those four cities alone account for 1,015 bands — 61% of every band Texas Metal Index tracks. Everywhere else in the state is a steep drop-off: Fort Worth sits at 85 bands, El Paso at 52, Denton at 38, Corpus Christi at 31, Arlington at 23, and Laredo at 18.

The show-count column is where the band totals stop mattering. Houston has the most bands in the state (293) and zero upcoming shows currently listed. Dallas, the third-largest scene by band count (237), also shows zero. Only Austin, San Antonio, and Fort Worth currently have any dated shows in our system — two apiece — and together those three cities account for all 7 upcoming shows we're tracking statewide. Fort Worth, with only 85 bands (less than a third of Houston's total), is punching well above its weight in terms of currently-booked activity relative to band count.
This doesn't mean Houston or Dallas venues are dark — it means that, as of this snapshot, no dated metal show in those cities has been entered into our system yet. Check the full, continuously updated list on our upcoming shows page.
A Scene Still Being Built: The Newest Bands
Despite the show gap, the pipeline of new bands hasn't slowed. Texas Metal Index's newest entries include three bands formed in 2026 itself: Andesite, Clad in Shadows, and Ferndom. Just behind them are two bands formed in 2025: Among the Living and Arterial Vivisection.
Five brand-new bands out of 1,665 total is a small slice, but it confirms that band formation in Texas continues even as our live-show calendar sits thin. Whether these newer acts translate into stage time will be one of the more interesting threads to track as 2026 progresses.
What the Venue Count Tells Us
Texas Metal Index currently tracks 100 venues across the state. With only 7 shows scheduled among them, the average venue in our index is hosting 0.07 upcoming metal shows. That's not a measure of any single venue's booking calendar — it reflects what's been entered into our system as of this date — but it does underscore how much show data in Texas metal is short-term and constantly turning over. A venue with nothing booked today can have a full calendar next week.

All figures in this article come from Texas Metal Index's own database of bands, shows, and venues across Texas, current as of 2026-09-30. Band counts reflect all active entries in our index at the time of writing; genre counts reflect self-reported or index-assigned genre tags, and bands may be counted under more than one genre. City-level band counts are based on each band's listed home city. Show counts reflect only shows with a confirmed date entered in our system as of this snapshot and will change as new shows are added. This is first-party data collected and maintained by Texas Metal Index; it is not aggregated from outside sources.
