Death Metal Dominates Texas: 619 Bands Make Up 37% of the Scene
Death Metal Isn't Just Popular in Texas — It's the Default
As of 2026-10-08, Texas Metal Index indexes 2,705 band-genre entries across the state's metal and heavy music scene, and more than a third of them — 619 bands, or 37% — carry a Death Metal tag. That's not a narrow plurality. Death Metal outnumbers the second-place genre, Thrash Metal (349 bands, 21%), by 270 bands. It's a gap wide enough to call Texas a death metal state, full stop.
A quick note on how to read these numbers: Texas Metal Index tags bands with every subgenre that applies to them, so a band playing blackened death metal or death-doom shows up in multiple categories. That's why the percentages in our dataset sum to well over 100%. The figures below represent the share of bands in our index carrying each tag, not mutually exclusive buckets. With that caveat out of the way, the hierarchy is still striking.

The Top Three Account for Nearly 80% of Tags
Death Metal, Thrash Metal, and Black Metal combined account for 1,300 band-genre entries — 78% of the percentage weight in our dataset. No other genre cracks double digits except Doom Metal at 10% (167 bands) and Progressive Metal at 9% (147 bands). After that, the field flattens out fast: six genres cluster in the 5-6% range (Grindcore, Heavy Metal, Metalcore, Hardcore Punk, Stoner Metal, Sludge Metal), each with roughly 82 to 105 bands.
The long tail is where things get thin. Speed Metal sits at the bottom with just 21 bands, less than half the count of the next-lowest genre, Hardcore, at 30. Combined, the bottom five genres on this list — Crossover Thrash, Power Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Groove Metal, Hardcore, and Speed Metal — total 266 bands, less than half of Death Metal's count alone.
What This Tells Us About Texas Metal
The data suggests Texas's heavy music identity is built on extremity. Death Metal, Black Metal, Brutal Death Metal, Deathcore, and Melodic Death Metal together represent five separate tags rooted in the death metal family tree, and they account for 852 band entries when summed — a clear signal that the state's scene skews toward the harsher, more aggressive end of the metal spectrum rather than classic heavy metal or power metal traditions, which post comparatively modest numbers at 99 and 56 bands respectively.
Thrash Metal's strong second-place showing (349 bands, 21%) and the related Crossover Thrash tag (58 bands, 3%) point to a durable thrash lineage in the state, one that traces back to Texas's historic 1980s thrash scene and continues to produce new bands today. Black Metal's 332 bands (20%) is arguably the most notable single data point outside the top spot — Texas is not a region typically associated with black metal in national conversations, yet it's effectively tied with thrash for the state's second-most-tagged subgenre.
Meanwhile, genres more associated with the 2000s metalcore and deathcore boom — Metalcore (95 bands), Deathcore (63 bands), and Groove Metal (49 bands) — register as comparatively minor categories in the current index, suggesting either a smaller active population of those bands or a scene that has moved on from those styles in favor of extreme and classic metal forms.
Bands working in the middle tiers — Doom Metal, Progressive Metal, Stoner Metal, and Sludge Metal — total 482 entries combined, forming a meaningful heavy/psych-adjacent wing of the scene that sits apart from both the extreme metal majority and the classic heavy metal minority.
For those looking to see these numbers play out live, Texas Metal Index tracks upcoming shows across the state, where the genre distribution documented here shows up night after night on local bills.
Methodology
This analysis is based on Texas Metal Index's own database of bands, shows, and venues across Texas, as of 2026-10-08. Band counts reflect the number of bands in our index tagged with each genre; because bands are frequently tagged with more than one subgenre (for example, a band might carry both Black Metal and Doom Metal tags), the percentages listed do not sum to 100% and should be read as the share of indexed bands carrying that specific tag, not as mutually exclusive categories. This data is first-party and unique to Texas Metal Index's ongoing effort to catalog the Texas heavy music scene.
