ZZ Top's 14 Shows Dwarf the Field in Texas Metal Index's Ranking of the State's Most Active Touring Bands

As of 2026-09-05, Texas Metal Index indexes 16 Texas-based bands with confirmed upcoming shows in our touring database, and one act is lapping the field. ZZ Top currently has 14 shows booked — nearly three times more than the second-place tie of 5. That's a striking number for a band whose genre tag in our system is simply "Southern Heavy Rock," and it says something about how Texas Metal Index's data spans far beyond the metalcore and hardcore scenes that dominate the rest of this list.

The other 15 bands on this list post far more modest, and far more typical, touring numbers — a handful of shows apiece, mostly clustered in the 1-to-5 range. That gap between ZZ Top and everyone else is the single most notable pattern in this dataset.

Here is the complete list of the 16 most active touring bands currently indexed by Texas Metal Index, ranked by confirmed show count.

Together, these 16 acts account for 57 confirmed shows in our system. ZZ Top alone represents nearly a quarter of that total — 24.6% of all indexed shows on this list come from a single band.

Metalcore and Hardcore Punk Are Running the Scene

Strip out the two legacy rock acts (ZZ Top and Toadies) and Bowling for Soup's pop-punk lane, and the remaining 13 bands split almost evenly between two tags. Four bands carry a Metalcore tag — Invent Animate, I Promised the World, Catch Your Breath, and Fit For a King — combining for 11 shows. Four more bands carry a Hardcore Punk tag — Die Spitz, Judiciary, Portrayal of Guilt, and Sparta — combining for 14 shows, largely on the strength of Die Spitz's 5-show total.

Notably, two bands straddle both categories at once: Judiciary is tagged both Crossover Thrash and Hardcore Punk, and Portrayal of Guilt is tagged both Black Metal and Hardcore Punk. That crossover is consistent with what Texas Metal Index has generally observed in the state's hardcore-adjacent scenes — bands rarely stay in a single genre lane.

Texas Bands, International Routes

One pattern jumps out from the "next show" column: most of these bands' upcoming dates aren't in Texas at all. Of the 16 next-show cities listed, at least eight are in the United Kingdom — Cardiff, Southampton, Leeds, Nottingham, Bristol, London, East London, and Edinburgh — and two more are in Australia (Brisbane, Torrensville). Add Milano, Italy for Polyphia, and it's clear that a majority of the bands on this list have their next confirmed date overseas rather than domestically.

Only a minority of next shows land on U.S. soil in this dataset: ZZ Top in Gilford, Bowling for Soup in Fort Collins, Die Spitz in Asbury Park, Toadies in Columbia, and Exmortis's next date is actually in Cambridge, UK, not the U.S. This suggests that the most active touring bands out of Texas right now are, by and large, mid-cycle on international runs rather than working regional Texas circuits — the shows that put them on this list happened elsewhere in their schedule, and their next indexed date happens to fall abroad.

The Long Tail: Furthest-Out Bookings

The dataset also shows how far in advance touring gets locked in. Ministry's next show isn't until 2027-04-10 in East London — more than seven months past our data pull date. Invent Animate and Catch Your Breath both show a next date of 2027-01-15, in Cardiff and London respectively, and Fit For a King follows close behind on 2027-01-26 in Torrensville. At the other end, ZZ Top's next date on 2026-09-05 is the soonest of any band on this list.

Legacy Acts Still Carry the Load

It's worth noting that the two bands with the deepest touring histories in Texas rock — ZZ Top and Toadies — are also two of the only 16 bands active enough to make this list at all, and ZZ Top's 14-show count isn't close to being challenged by any band from the state's current metalcore, hardcore, or death metal scenes. Whether that reflects genuinely different touring cycles (arena/amphitheater runs versus club circuits) or simply where each band sits in its release calendar right now, the raw numbers in Texas Metal Index's database put ZZ Top well outside the pattern set by every other Texas act currently on tour.

This analysis is based on Texas Metal Index's internal database of bands, shows, and venues, current as of 2026-09-05. "Show count" reflects the number of confirmed upcoming shows indexed per band at the time of the data pull. Only bands with at least one confirmed upcoming show were included, and the 16 bands listed represent the full set meeting that threshold in our current index. Genre tags are drawn directly from each band's Texas Metal Index profile.
